I’m a first year radiology student and was wondering about the legality of showing the patient their x-rays. I’ve been receiving conflicting information, which I’m not sure how that is possible, so I hope someone could shed light on this.
I know if you take away all patient information anyone can look at it (obviously seen in this subreddit I know patients can ultimately receive a copy, so I’m not sure why they wouldn’t be allowed to see their own x-rays.
I know you can’t diagnose or tell them anything about their x-rays so maybe you shouldn’t be showing it anyway. Especially if there is something major like an obvious fracture which would cause them to panic. Would you use discretion is which patients you show it to?
Furthermore, can parents see their children’s x-rays if they are a minor? I’m not sure the legality surrounding pediatric patients with guardians vs. the fact that they also could be considered their own body that can’t be shared.
