Thinking about switching to rad tech program

I’ve been taking prereqs for nursing some of which are also prereqs for the rad tech program at the community college I attend. I know that it’s very competitive but I don’t think there’s a waitlist because it’s mentioned that we have to apply every year. I don’t think I want to go into nursing I know that there’s a lot more opportunities but I just don’t see myself being a nurse. I think rad tech is a better fit I really enjoy anatomy. I also looked into sonography but I would have to wait longer for that since the only program near me opens once per year while the rad tech program open twice per year. I have a couple of questions but any advice is helpful. 1. Do you enjoy your career? What would you rate on a scale of 1-10? 2. What’s are your favorite and least favorite things about being a rad tech? 3. What kind of job do you have? Have you tried multiple modalities and which one was your favorite? 4. Is it a really saturated field or does it depend on where you live? 5. Do you reg

Thinking about going to community college for Sonography after my Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree.

Hey everybody! Obvious newbie here. I am thinking about going into Sonography - either Cardiac Sonography, OB/GYN, possibly Vascular. I am currently in nursing school and have discovered this is just not my niche and I feel like I'm really struggling more than the average nursing student. I have a Bachelor of Applies Arts Degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a Master's of Science Degree in Health Administration. I would go to a community college here in my home state to complete this degree/licensure. I want to remain in the medical field as I do like that part of my life and current job I work in the Emergency Department. A couple of questions I have is: - What am I looking at in terms of school wise (how many years would I have) combined with my Bachelor and Master's Degree? - Any body with a nursing background here that felt that same as I do/did that went the sonography route? - Will I be employable anywhere? I.E. is there demand for sonographers now a

Think about going into radiology program

I’ve been taking prereqs for a nursing program at my community college. I don’t think I’m really into nursing so I was thinking of going into sonography and it seems cool but there seems to be not a lot of room for career advancement. Also the only sonography program in my area opens up once a year while the rad tech program opens twice a year (still very competitive but I think if I work hard I can do it). I have a couple questions but any advice will be helpful. What do you like most and least about being a rad tech? What kind of job do you have? Is the job market really oversaturated or does it really depend on where you live? Did any of you get a job offer from your clinical site? (like is that a common thing or not really) Whats the work life balance like? Is there any room for career advancement? Was this your first career choice and do you regret it? If you could go back would you pick a different career? submitted by /u/LolosReddit_ [link] [comments] sour

Plus size rad tech student

Hey everyone! I'm currently a 2nd year student in a rad tech program and about to enter semester 3 very soon. Wanted to vent about something that is the cause of like 60% of my anxiety about radiography school. My hospital does not have a diverse range of lead apron sizes, and bigger sized stocked surgical scrubs. Every time I am scheduled to be in Fluoroscopy I have tremendous anxiety about whether or not I will be able to find a lead apron that fits me correctly that day. And when I go to surgery, I have to specifically ask my instructor to get me bigger sized scrubs than what are stocked in our department. Has anyone else run into this issue? I am plus sized but also feel like a hospital should be able to accommodate everyone in the program especially with the lead aprons. I've considered buying my own, but they are like $500 :( And I also know for a fact that there are people who are my size who have worked in the department before and will be some who come after me as wel

Thoughts on this Taiwanese study on low dose risk?

Disclaimer: I have casual interest after having a PET/CT last year prior to even having a biopsy (never ended up even having one) and ending up thus far, with a clear bill of health. I did not know the associated radiation with the exam. Anyways, everything out there mostly states that the relationship between low dose imaging particularly in adults and cancer is fairly low. But, this study seems to highlight a more significant relationship. Just curious your actually trained and experienced thoughts as I have found very little mention of this study out there. Question about online school vs local

It looks like the usual way to do radiology programs was with local schools, however, it looks like online programs have started to become available. Would you all say one is better than the other to get into a program? My local program is very competitive to get into which is very intimidating. As a Radiographer do you think it is fair that the employee need to have his training on special modality outside office hour?

It is a problem that my friend encountered recently.... Of course i think it sounds unfair.... In addition, it is not official training, therefore, in theory, no one will teach you anything, what you can do is observe.... But his boss said that clearly he will not provide any training during office hour, if you don't learn outside office hour, you cannot complain that you recieved no training, because he provided the opportunity. It is the responsibility of the Radiographer who did not take it. It is obvious that if you don't spend time on that, you will not stand a chance on getting a promotion. I just wonder is this kind of practice also common in American or other countries, will the boss get any trouble from that? Marriage during radiology residency?

Question about marriage during residency. Well I matched into diagnostic radiology this cycle and I have been thinking about marriage but I don't know when is the best time during residency to do so? Also, I know radiology residency, like any advanced speciality, starts at PGY-2, and radiology in particular is a completely new science, so unlike IM or peds for example where residents will go through them being safe with what they learnt during medical school and building up on it, radiology, in contrast, needs a lot of studying sincee the actual journey starts after the internship. So, taking this into account, I'm just afraid it will make things harder for me to succeed in residency. Emotional exhaustion continues to be the most prevalent domain with 85% reporting feeling emotionally drained at least a few days in the past week. Identifying implants in patients

Dear techies, In Denmark we do not have a standardized method to identify implants in patients that need a MRI. So when a patient shows up to a MRI-scan we need to investigate through phone calls and multiple databases. It all takes so damn long time and we easily get behind schedule. I’m investigating new ways for us to do this quicker. Therefore I’m curious to know how you guys do it: How do you identify (in operated) implants, does it take long time, how many times a week do you experience it and how do you know which procedure (conditionals) to follow? Looking forward to read your answers. - Simon submitted by /u/FredSimonElliott [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/Radiology/comments/md0045/identifying_implants_in_patients/

Radiation safety around the world

I am a tech for 5 yesrs now and in my experience anywhere i go there is no radiation safety. Currently i am working in a tertiary hospital and our motto is worldclass within your reach, sadly we dont practice proper radiation safety like wearing gonadal thyroidal and abdominal shielding when performing procedures. Especially when we are performing portable xrays our doctors just request portable chest xray even tho the patient is ambulatory and worse the nurses doesnt want to transpo the ambulatory patients in our department. Sorry for my bad english. Hows your radiation safety in your country?! submitted by /u/wckd25 [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/Radiology/comments/mcw2xi/radiation_safety_around_the_world/

Is it normal to be asked if I have breast implants during imaging of my low back?

I’m not sure how this question will be received here but...not sure where else to ask it! I had imaging done of my low back today and the person (X-ray tech?) asked me if I had breast implants. After answering I asked him why he had asked the question and he told me I had very dense breasts. Since I left I’ve felt kind of low-level creeped out by the interaction. Was this a necessary question for him to ask me or am I overreacting? Thanks :) submitted by /u/BobBoulion3 [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/Radiology/comments/mcqp3l/is_it_normal_to_be_asked_if_i_have_breast/

Insulin pumps and MRI

Hi folks. I’m a rad that has been offered an MRI training position which I am very excited about. However, I am a type 1 diabetic using an insulin pump. Has anyone had any experience with pump safety in MRI rooms? I have done some googling and it doesn’t look good but I thought I should double check here. 42yo and starting Radiography school in July

Hello! I am a 42yo musician on a journey to a new career path. I just got accepted into a 23 month program for Radiologic Technology. I have no medical background thus far. Can anyone give me an idea what to expect and perhaps suggest some ways to prepare for this new chapter? I’d love to familiarize myself a bit with some basics before classes begin in July. Anyone 4ROX1 USAF or 68p Army?

I want to become a radiation therapist and have been considering either going to FSCJ in Jacksonville Florida for an AS degree for 9k or going to the Military and getting a radiology MOS before school. Is it worth it to get certified by the military and spend 4-6 years before going to college? How does the experience in the military radiology transfer to the civilian job market? I can pay off the tuition with savings, would it be in my best interest to skip the military and get civilian certified to start working? submitted by /u/Illustrious-Company9 [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/Radiology/comments/mc31t6/anyone_4rox1_usaf_or_68p_army/

Is this dose within acceptable limits?

this isn’t a question about whether I am going to die from a CT scan I swear I am a student in the healthcare field and shadowed in the cath lab. A diagnostic cath was done and an aortic balloon pump was placed. The patient dose was recorded at 598 mGy. To me, this seemed really high, however I am not a radiology or rad tech student so I am not qualified to say. I guess I’m just wondering if this is a normal patient dose for this procedure submitted by /u/Testingcheatson [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/Radiology/comments/mbu67w/is_this_dose_within_acceptable_limits/

Weird/Difficult OR & C-arm cases needed

Discussing different OR/C-arm cases for class currently. I'm looking for any cases that required unique C-arm skills/positioning or overall difficult OR cases. Observation in Sonography

Hi Guys, I am thinking of doing a career change and the two career paths I've been looking into are Occupational Therapy and Diagnostic Medical Sonography. However, I found some things about occupational therapy that have made me question getting into that career field and I haven't been admitted to any schools yet. DMS definitely looks like a career field that interests me and I would like to get some observation hours in or volunteer for one to get a better understanding of the pros and cons before I jump into applying to some programs. I also would like to get a reference letter from a healthcare professional for DSM program applications by volunteering. COVID-19 has made shadowing/volunteering significantly more difficult. A lot of the hospitals that I've e-mailed said their volunteer opportunities are suspended until further notice. Are there any other sites where I can possibly volunteer for? submitted by /u/xHolliWouldx [link] [comments] source https://

Does anyone else come from a different profession?

Does anyone else come from a different profession ? I’m about to finish my BA in social work but honestly I don’t think this is for me. I figured I’d finish this degree since I worked so hard for it but to be honest I just grew out of it. I work at a hospital doing clerical work and being around the imagining department has inspired me to pursue this profession everyone seems happy doing what they do. I guess what I’m asking is has anyone else been in the same position as me ? submitted by /u/DefinitionDifficult5 [link] [comments] source https://www.reddit.com/r/Radiology/comments/mblccg/does_anyone_else_come_from_a_different_profession/

Tips for penetrating shoulders during intraoperative c-spine case with c-arm?

Hi all, I am having trouble giving the surgeon what he wants to see during a c-spine case where he, of course, wants to see C6/7 and the pt barely has a neck. They’ve taped the shoulder and filled the opening with saline and I’ve collimated. Are there any tricks to being able to see more? The top of the spine usually burns out when I’m too far down towards the feet. I’m just a little confused third year bunny please read

I am interested in breast cancer. It’s the field I am most passionate about because it hits close to home. I can read about, research, talk, study breast cancer all day. I want to be an expert in the field. Here are my thoughts on the different paths to get time to a fruitful career in breast cancer. 1) Breast Radiology: I would get to interact with women and have direct patient care. I have a great, bubbly, energetic, optimistic personality which I think can be a positive in this field. What I am scared of is I hope radiology residency isn’t isolating. I’m not the biggest fan of sitting in a dark room by myself feeling like a work horse cranking out imaging. 2) that leads me to point 2: IM route. This is a viable option. I am not super interested in the day to day pathologies of IM and the brunt work. I do like feeling like a team and interacting with all different kinds of people. I like how when we have down time in IM we can have some comradre with our team and chill and make jo

[Question] Irish Radiographers, how did you get your PSAC? What was the experience like?

As the title suggest, I saw an advertisement for a job that requires a CORU registration, thankfully I already have that and is not a problem. However, the second statement says that one must (and im quoting here): "Must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC)" So I guess my question is that, how did you get your PSAC? Is it a requirement for radiographers? What is needed to get one? Thank you in advance for your replies!
