So my home institution uses Agfa, so I may be somewhat biased because that’s what I trained on and feel comfortable with, but I do away rotations at the children’s hospital down the road and they use Phillips and holy shit it is the most user unfriendly experience you could possibly make for a PACS system.
1) No click and drag scrolling. This is the biggest one for me. Got a thin slice chest you wanna get through? Then better give yourself an hour to scroll through with your finger and make your PIP sore from the repetitive scrolling. With Agfa you can get through a study by just clicking and pulling the mouse up or down through the study.
2) second biggest problem: changing the layout configuration takes forever and you have to look at a different monitor to do it. Admittedly I might be slower than someone who uses it all the time but there’s no way this wierd system of dragging boxes over your images is more efficient and intuitive than just dragging your images into the desired box on the pacs screen. With Agfa you just drag whatever series you want into whatever box you want it to go into and it makes sense and is quick. You don’t have to take your eyes off your pacs monitor either.
3) finding old studies is way too hard. They are labeled as a 4 letter non-word. Like right ankle is labeled ANKR or something stupid like that. Why not just make a list that shows the whole study name? Don’t get me started on how you have to click that tiny arrow or click the scroll wheel and drag to get to older studies too.
4) you have to get to a submenu to do basic measurements. Like if you want a roi you have to right click then select measurements then select roi. Something as common as simple measurements should be one right click then one click on your selection at most.
How can people stand to use such an inefficient system and why is such an inefficient system so popular? Are all these problems able to be customized away or something? If so why don’t they make the default settings actually make sense? There are literally zero features about this pacs that I think are improvements over the Agfa system.
Disclosure: Agfa paid me $50 million dollars to make this post.
