I've had this job for almost a month (also my 1st job out of school) so I feel as if the answer is obvious but I figured I would ask here for some advice from my fellow techs. Anyways, I will be switching to nights in 2 weeks but have been in the OR most of my time so far. The main OR tech is moving in about a month leaving only 1 other OR tech who works a very limited schedule. Today my supervisor asked if I would rather work days in the OR. There is a 3$ an hour difference in pay for working nights so I was going to ask if they would match it for moving to OR. The reason I chose nights was the pay differential. Also everyone I work with hates the OR. My coworkers are even encouraging me to take the position and see if I can get a pay increase. The department is always short on staff for the OR and I get along very well with the surgeons. Would it be appropriate to ask for the 3$ extra or maybe negotiate a pay increase by signing a contract? I'm expecting a no but will appreciate any advice you guys can give me.
