So I started my first day at a new hospital on Monday. I was surprised they didn’t have a dosimeter set up for me. I talked with them about it, and they said it would come in about three months. I didn’t think that was appropriate, but I didn’t say anything. A few days go by. I was avoiding fluoro and mostly staying in general x-ray until today when one of the techs stuck me there. After the first exam I did, I walked up to the lead tech and said, “preferably, I don’t want to do fluoroscopy or surgery without a dosimeter….” He huffed as I continued to say, “…because it’s a lot of radiation.” he then chucked angrily and said, “it’s not a lot of radiation.” I could see that what I said had instantly pissed him off, so I back tracked a little bit and stuttered, “unless you have a spare,” knowing they probably couldn’t even follow my dose with it. I said this to mainly clarify that I’m not intentionally trying to avoid doing exams. He stormed away and grabbed me a spare and then began to vent to his coworker with me intentionally right next to them. He said 97% of the people that work there never use a dosimeter. The other tech then proceeded to say she only wore hers when she was pregnant. I wasn’t going to argue with him but isn’t it the law to have a personal monitoring device on at all times? If JCAHO walked in and none wore it, wouldn’t they get fined? Did he have any right to be upset with me? I’m only 22 and would like to have kids in the future. The last time I worked a significant amount in fluoroscopy and surgery, I wasn’t below the minimum dose amount, so I want to be monitored. I feel like I was invalidated and laughed at for wanting to be safe. What are your thoughts?
