So I had my very first day as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. I only did outpatients for the day since I still had to be trained in other parts of the department (the hospital I’m working in wasn’t my home hospital as a student). It’s amazing how all of a sudden there is so much responsibility when determining whether or not your images are good enough. Yes, I knew this going into the job obviously, but it doesn’t hit you until YOU start calling the shots on your own images. “Oh man, it’s close to being a repeat, but, should I repeat it?” One time I looked behind me because I saw another coworker there and they said, “Well, you’re the tech now, what do you do?!” It just really opened my eyes is all.
I guess I came here to ask... Are there any stories where anybody totally botched their first day? Or maybe asked for help from another technologist because for some reason, you just couldn’t get that scapular “Y” view? I also never did any weight-bearing feet as a student, so when my first order came in on my first day, doing an oblique weight-bearing foot was even a challenge! I know it should only go up from here, and I know I’m being hard on myself for my first day. But I just feel like so much is expected of me (Understandably so). I graduated, I know my stuff, but I’m not nearly as fast as everyone and it’s a little discouraging and quite frankly, scary. I fake it until I make it most of the time, but this is a lot to take in! (Not to mention, where I work now is at LEAST 20 times bigger than my home hospital).
Thanks for reading if you got this far (:
