Exposure Factor

I am a new radiographer and have been practicing for less than a year. I would like to ask for advice on how to choose an exposure factor for a Lumbar oblique view. because I can't seem to get it right. it's always too bright or too grainy. I don't want to do repeat exposures given that it requires a higher factor.
