I am currently the director of imaging at a 110 bed hospital. I’m tired. My staff is tired. I’ve been in this position for 10 months, but have been with the same company for over 20 years. I oversee 12 departments (including CV services). I have lost a lot of staff due to the local competition paying significantly more. I have advocated for my team, I work shifts to help them out, I have restructured schedules to make them more appealing and have asked for travelers as needed. Only about half of my traveler positions have been filled, still working on getting more.
I have spoken with other directors within the same company. They are having the same challenges and some of us have better leadership then others. I have great leadership, but there is only so much they can do because they can’t pay techs at one hospital more than techs at another.
I have been offered an MRI position at an outpatient center for the same company. Day shift, basically whatever hours I want to work, either 5 8s or 4 10s. I can’t imagine getting home before 6pm. I am tired of always being available, having to deal with issues on the evenings and weekends. I miss my free time. It’s a $30k pay cut, not including call or any OT I may get. I also had a significant health issue in the past few months that has adjusted my priorities. I want to spend time with my family and be able to leave work at work.
I love my staff, hate the commute, and am really good at my job. I just don’t see any end to the staffing issues that are plaguing half of my departments. I have worked hard to get where I am, but I don’t know if it is still worth it. I don’t want to be labeled a quitter. Any thoughts out there on what you would do? Any advice would be appreciated.
