My sister (32 year old) has a lot of health issues. She’s just been kind of sickly since she was 19. Anyway, she was recently hospitalized for what appears to be related to reproductive health, so her doctor got her scheduled for an ultrasound.
Somehow it wasn’t communicated that it would not be a standard ultrasound and that it would transvaginal (maybe this is obvious to you guys, but I work in healthcare and I didn’t know that they stuck that probe up there… I’ve only ever seen it over the heart or abdomen). Anyway, my sister was of course a little surprised when they informed her at the appointment. I’m guessing she was not properly prepared to have someone looking all the way in there, and I don’t blame her. I’m very open about my body, but even I would feel uncomfortable not having had a chance to prepare for that beforehand.
Well I think my sister was noticeably uncomfortable as it was being performed, and the tech said to her “what’s your problem, you’ve never had sex before?”
To me, this just seems so inappropriate. I’d never relate any kind of medical procedure to having sex to a patient, ESPECIALLY one that is so similar to penetrative sex.
This is my older sister, I’m 26. But I’m honestly furious. She’s a very reserved person, but that doesn’t mean she can be talked down to.
What do you guys think?
Is this normal for ultrasound techs and I’m overreacting?
