Your experience working during COVID

Hello! I hope this is appropriate for the subreddit. Also, sorry if formatting is weird! I don't post very often and I'm on a mobile.

Backstory here, questions are below if you wanna skip!

I started down the path of switching careers last year. I took Healthcare related pre-reqs (I am considering Dental Hygiene as well as Radiology) at a community college in Fall of 2019. I even applied to programs in early 2020. Due to weird admission environment (thanks COVID), I didn't get into any of the programs I applied for despite having a pretty good TEAs score and As and Bs in pre-reqs. I have spent the last few months studying to retake the TEAs, improving grades in pre-reqs, and taking co-reqs for some local programs. I also have had time to sit and think a little TOO much about working in healthcare due to the pandemic. I would love to hear any input on how people in the field feel about COVID safety. My husband is relatively high risk, so I want to avoid bringing it home.

I have a few specific questions:

  • Do you feel relatively safe at work?
  • What steps are you and/or your employers taking to keep you safe?
  • Have you or any of your coworkers contracted COVID while on the job?

Also general questions for someone considering a career in radiology:

  • What are some things you wish someone told you when you started school?
  • I have a feeling once I become an RT, I will want to specialize. Is it possible to specialize while on the job as a Rad Tech? Some specialties that interest me are Radioation Therapy and MRI. I'm pretty hands on and love a dynamic work environment. Are you a rad tech specialist, and if so, what do you love about your specialty?
  • Were you able to work part time/full time while in school?

Thanks in advance for your time!

I got into the Rad Tech program!

I just want to share with you that I finally got into the program at our local community college and i’m starting this summer. For context, I’m already 30yo with a prior BS degree and decided on a career change. During the pandemic until this semester, I took my time to take all the pre-reqs and GEs required while working. I also volunteered at a hospital for over a year. It was optional due to COVID, but I still did it to get the brownie points. I finally applied last March 2023 and received good news last Friday. The program is based on a pointing system, so I think having good grades really mattered. It was my first time applying and the only program I applied to. I didn’t know it was possible to get in on your first try because of all of the stories I’ve been reading, so don’t lose hope because it’s possible! Wishing everyone who’s applying this year good luck. You can do this! If you have questions, I will do my best to answer them 😊 also if you have tips on how to survive this ...

Do rad techs/sonographers deal with vomit often?

Hi there! I’m currently considering going to school to be a rad tech or sonographer but I’m struggling to find out if you guys deal with vomit a lot. I am emetophobic (phobia of vomit) and, while I think I’d like these jobs a lot, it does worry me to think about having to deal with it often. Question regarding ultrasound

Hello radiologists, I have a quick question regarding ultrasounds of the scrotum. (Not asking for medical advice just wondering about something). I’ve done an ultrasound of the scrotum and the radiologist only took pictures of the right side of the testicle and then the left side but not in between so my question is, do ultrasounds show all “angles” of a testicle or does the device need to be held at various areas to show a full testicle? Because if only one side of the testicle is seen then wouldn’t the other side be as important in diagnosing something?
